Neil Nitin Mukesh to Immortalize Grandfather Mukesh in Upcoming Biopic – A Grandson’s Emotional Tribute to a Timeless Legend

After years of quiet preparation, Bollywood actor and producer Neil Nitin Mukesh has finally confirmed that a biopic on the life of his legendary grandfather, playback singer Mukesh Chand Mathur, is officially in the works.

In an exclusive interview with News18, Neil revealed that he has spent the past two years meticulously researching and developing the project. “My team and I have been writing for quite some time. Not many know that I’m a professional writer and also have a production house,” Neil shared.

Driven by a deep personal connection, Neil has taken charge of every aspect of the film’s early development, from scripting to sourcing archival materials. He has been diving into family archives filled with old photographs, handwritten notes, rare recordings, and treasured memorabilia. The actor has also spent countless hours with his father, Nitin Mukesh, gathering untold stories and cherished memories about Mukesh, whose songs defined a golden era of Hindi cinema.

“It’s a story I’ve been eager to tell ever since I was a child,” said Neil. “There’s a full exercise in place — every time I sit down with my father, I listen to anecdotes about my grandfather. His life has been so beautiful and inspiring. There’s a lovely arc to his story that people need to see.”

The biopic will trace Mukesh’s incredible journey from humble beginnings as the son of a railway clerk to becoming one of Bollywood’s most beloved and unforgettable voices. With a legacy spanning generations, Mukesh’s impact on Indian music is considered both historic and deeply emotional.

Neil also expressed a strong desire to portray his grandfather on screen himself. “I don’t think there can be a better Mukesh than me. Neil Nitin Mukesh is Mukesh. I know him better than anyone else. Dad also wants me to play my grandfather for emotional reasons,” he said.

While the script is complete and the core creative team is in place, Neil and his production house are currently seeking producers and financiers to bring the dream project to life. “The business of cinema is very different. As actors, we look for opportunities, but we’re often given them based on how others perceive us. Your draw at the box office matters,” he added.

Currently, Neil is starring in the musical drama series Hai Junoon! Dream. Dare. Dominate, alongside Jacqueline Fernandez. Directed by Abhishek Sharma and produced by Jio Creative Lab, the series premiered on JioHotstar on May 16, 2025.

For Neil, however, the upcoming biopic is more than just another film—it is a heartfelt tribute to the man who not only shaped Indian music but also his own destiny.

“This is not just a film,” Neil concluded, “It’s my legacy. It’s my love letter to Dadaji.”
